Bawan's Greek Restaurant - Vancouver

GO BIG OR GO HOME? NOT ALWAYS THE CASE.

Whilst running errands along West Broadway, we found ourselves
too famished to make it home and STILL cook.
After grabbing supplies at DeSerres - which is a great art supplies store -
we pondered the little Ramen shop next door or having Greek two doors down.
We opted for something non-Asian for a change!
Now...this place may not be big or fancy, but the portions are plentiful and
the dishes are rather tasty.  If you find yourself near Granville Street,
check out Bawan's Greek Restaurant, at 1453 West Broadway 604-677-1703.

Bawan's Greek restaurant offers a small but good selection of traditional Greek dishes, including your usual suspects, such as souvlaki, donairs, moussaka, spanikopita and Greek and tabouleh salads - as well as a few appetizers for those with a hankering for pita, humus, tzatziki or dolmathes!  Besides Greek food, Bawan restaurant also offers more 'Western' stylings with chicken parmesan, ribs, steaks and a wide range of pastas, even including lasagna.

My partner and I are both rather fond of Greek food and since we probably do not eat it regularly enough, we often end up ordering the same few meals - in this case, we chose Moussaka and Roast Lamb.  All entrees come with 'seasoned rice, roasted potatoes, Greek salad, tzatziki and pita bread', as if the generous portion of your chosen delight were not enough!

Moussaka is often made with ground beef, eggplant and a creamy bechamel sauce
 - it is reminiscent of lasagna as it is layered but is a completely different animal!

Roast lamb is pretty much self-explanatory - but I do recommend dabbing
each tender bit of juicy meat in the creamy, garlicky tzatziki for full effect!

As is often the problem when there are only two of us, you can only sample so much food at one sitting.  I would like to return to try some of their other daily specials - including their Tuesday pasta special!  The menu prices are very reasonable, averaging $12 per entree - and as you can see, a generous portion it is!
A casual and friendly little place, Bawan's Greek Restaurant gets a thumbs up by my account.  You may not get the ambiance of Stepho's on Davie Street, but you also do not have to line up for a table!

TO VEG OR NOT TO VEG

Bawan restaurant offers only a few options for those non-carnivorous types.
However, they DO have a vegetarian moussaka - and if their meat moussaka is a good
example of their food, then I would definitely try this flavourful choice!

RANDOM FOOD TIP OF THE DAY:  If you have ever wondered why North American cheddar cheese is often ORANGE (but milk is generally pretty white or cream coloured), you should read this article!  Food dyes are not only unnecessary, but can be possibly harmful with negative side effects!  Go Natural as best you can!  Check out:   Why is cheddar cheese ORANGE?
